Biomedical Data Specialist

Location: Calverton Office

IMS supports multiple bioinformatics initiatives from government and commercial institutions in public health and medical research applications. IMS is looking for an entry-level Biomedical Data Specialist to provide support to researchers conducting clinical and epidemiologic studies as well as provide guidance to staff conducting public health initiatives. In this position, you may carry out a variety of tasks depending on requirements of the projects you are assigned and your skills. For example, on some projects, you will review, encode, and edit clinical data related to biomedical research and provide biomedical guidance to analytic programmer staff. On other projects, you will also provide technical and quality assurance guidance to national field staff in the compilation and reporting of their impact data. On additional projects, you will perform quality control on clinical data and work with staff at data source sites to correct errors. Additional tasks may include providing researchers with technical and help desk support in their search for biospecimens and clinical data. Tasks common to many projects include developing documentation and training materials, ensuring compliance with Section 508 guidelines on document accessibility, and working as part of cross-disciplinary teams including programming staff, management, and clients. Additional tasks common to multiple projects may include attending scientific meetings and preparing minutes for distribution to participants. Please note this is not a laboratory position.


  • Bachelor’s degree from a U.S. Department of Education accredited institution in Biology or a related physical science field with at least a 2.9 GPA
  • 0-2 years of related experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency with basic computer functions and Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to relay biomedical information to clients in layman terms
  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated customer service skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and organization skills
  • Must be able to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work within a team
  • Experience with clinical data a plus
  • Strong presentation skills preferred
