UI/UX Web Designer (Entry-Level)

Location: Calverton Office

IMS supports multiple bioinformatics initiatives from government and commercial institutions in public health and medical research applications. IMS is looking for an entry-level UI/UX Web Designer to design and code websites with an emphasis on usability and accessibility, covering topics such as cancer statistics, public health resources, and tools for cancer centers. In this position, you will collaborate with the IMS team on project objectives, client requirements, content strategy, process flows, and user interfaces for multiple client projects. You will also create low and high fidelity mockups for an iterative design process and ensure that all product designs are fully functional on mobile devices and across platforms. Tasks will also include establishing style guides and design patterns, and verifying that websites meet the requirements for accessibility and functionality, including compliance with the latest laws and best practices for U.S. government websites.


  • Bachelor’s degree, or Associate’s degree with equivalent experience, from an accredited institution, as determined by the U.S. Department of Education, with at least a 2.9 GPA
  • 0-4 years of direct professional experience in web design
  • Proficiency in HTML and CSS, including demonstrated experience in hand-coding
  • Proficiency in JavaScript preferred
  • Proficiency with current prototyping/design tools (e.g. Adobe CC, Axure, Figma)
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to relay technical information in everyday terms
  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated customer service skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and organization skills
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work within a team
  • Ability to deliver and accept constructive feedback
  • Knowledge of Section 508 and W3C WCAG 2.0 guidelines a plus
  • Examples of prior web design work to demonstrate the above skills are required
