Support for the Division of Cancer Control & Population Sciences

Our journey with the National Cancer Institute's the Division of Cancer Control & Population Sciences (DCCPS) since 1984 has led us to make significant contributions to the world of cancer research - developing integral statistical applications, preparing publication-ready analytics, building a data collection system for central cancer registry operations, acting as an honest data broker for large national datasets, and performing data linkages.

SEER*Stat

In 1997, IMS launched SEER*Stat software, a powerful NCI-funded application allowing researchers to analyze cancer-related databases.

SEER*Stat is used to view individual cancer records and produce statistics for studying the impact of cancer on a population.

Statistics & Cancer Data Management

Extending SEER*Stat - Applications Suite

We develop the following applications that are used in conjunction with SEER*Stat output to complete the support ecosystem for research activities involving SEER data.

  • Joinpoint software for analyzing trends in cancer incidence and mortality.
  • HD*Calc (Health Drivers Calculator) to generate multiple summary measures to evaluate health drivers related to cancer.
  • DevCan software to calculate the probability of developing or dying of cancer.

Websites & Applications

Research-grade interactive websites and applications.

We develop research-grade web tools for DCCPS to present cancer statistics intended for researchers, healthcare providers, policy makers, and the general public.

Web & Application Development

Cancer Statistics Explorer Network

IMS developed the Cancer Statistics Explorer Network to help researchers find the cancer statistics tools best suited to their needs. The site provides access to interactive, filterable pre-calculated statistics applications with dynamic data visualization capabilities.

Visitors can access to SEER incidence and survival, U.S. mortality, U.S. prevalence and lifetime risk statistics, statistics for childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancers from the NCI's National Childhood Cancer Registry (NCCR), and world-wide childhood cancer survival from the CONCORD Programme.

We also implement interactive statistical explorers for projects outside of NCI, such as the CiNA Explorer for the North American Associate of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) and CAL*Explorer for the California Cancer Registry.

Other Statistical Tools

The intuitive filter capabilities of the following sites and applications allow researchers to quickly find publication-ready data of interest, often represented as annotated graphics and tables.

For Researchers

  • Cancer Stat Facts
Presents key measures of the nation's progress against cancer
  • State Cancer Profiles
Interactive map providing a geographic profile of cancer burden in the U.S.

For Patients & Others

  • Cancer Trends Progress Report
Presents key measures of the nation's progress against cancer
  • Oral Cancer Survival Calculator
Estimates based on characteristics for patients and clinicians to reference

Data Management

Data collection and distribution at a national scale.

  • Acquisition, cleaning & linkage
  • Harmonization & metadata standardization
  • Quality assurance & control
  • Documentation control
  • Data standards implementation
  • Request processing
  • Scientific reporting & manuscript support

We're responsible for a large portion of the pipeline that prepares data for cancer research.

Data Coordinating Centers

SEER Data Management System

Under contract with DCCPS's Surveillance Research Program (SRP), IMS developed and maintains the SEER Data Management System (SEER*DMS) to support all the core functions of a central cancer registry.

Since the NCI's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program began in 1973, geographic coverage has expanded to represent nearly 50% of the U.S. population. SEER registries are required to submit their data annually to NCI through SEER*DMS, representing nearly one million cancer cases per year.

We currently have legal agreements with additional registries to support the National Childhood Cancer Registry (NCCR) data in SEER*DMS, as well as with other federal agencies to perform linkages to enhance the SEER data.

IMS performs linkages of SEER data with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and other federal data sources. This work entails signing confidentiality agreements with all parties so we can serve as an honest data broker between the organization and DCCPS. As an honest broker we assess linkage quality, clean the data, encrypt restricted variables, and create research databases for approved use by outside investigators.

We serve as the main point of contact for investigator requests to use the linked databases, tracking progress of applications and signatures on data use agreements, as well as preparation and shipping of final approved data cuts.

Match*Pro Linkage Software

In collaboration with DCCPS, we developed Match*Pro to conduct record linkages and assess the quality of the linkage data. The software can link data using PII or supports privacy-preserving record linkage (PPRL) techniques to protect sensitive data.

Statistical Analysis & Cancer Data Management

IMS performs analytic services for DCCPS using large national studies and public-use datasets that focus on cancer, health-related outcomes, dietary history, physical activity, and tobacco use, among others.

We create analytic files, conduct bivariate and multivariate statistical analyses, and summarize results in preparation for publication.

Security & Privacy

Experts in biomedical regulation regulatory compliance.

A meaningful commitment to security and privacy is what makes us a strong choice to process medical data representing more than half of the U.S., and handle data collection and access for various federal and non-profit organizations internationally.

Hosting & Computing

Infrastructure for Critical Work

Our hosting and computing center has a 99.9% planned uptime. We bring the physical and digital infrastructure to keep biomedical research running, plus the decades of experience to provide what DCCPS and researchers require.

The tools we maintain for DCCPS utilize our FISMA-Compliant hosting & computing center and have approved Authority to Operate (ATOs) from the NCI.

Controlled Access Data Repositories (CADRs)

IMS handles hosting, processing, and data broker responsibilities for NIH-designated CADRs. For upcoming projects that may be subject to CADR requirements, see our BioShare research and data platform.

Preparation for Publication

Our systems analysts, biomedical analysts, and a variety of other IMS experts contribute to publications in collaboration with DCCPS, including continued support for the Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer.

How We Contribute

  • Editorial support and article preparation
  • Statistical analysis and data compilation
  • Creation of publication-ready tables and graphics
